Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
Matthew 9:38

Mission

The Munderloh Foundation awards scholarship grants to seminary students committed to becoming pastors in the parish ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and to seminary students committed to becoming pastors and deaconesses in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) who are in financial need.

The scholarship grants are limited to students attending the following four seminaries:
  • Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago - Chicago, Illinois
  • Trinity Lutheran Seminary - Columbus, Ohio
  • United Lutheran Seminary – Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Concordia Theological Seminary - Ft. Wayne, Indiana
  • Concordia Seminary - St. Louis, Missouri
Each scholarship grant is contingent upon the student accepting the “challenge” of actively recruiting another to undertake a life’s vocation in the parish ministry.

Corporate

The Munderloh Foundation is a Michigan nonprofit corporation which is exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Section 501(c)(3).

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees, most of whom are members of St. James Lutheran Church of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. The trustees determine the Foundation’s policies and review the scholarship grant applications.

The officers of the Foundation and its Pastoral Counselors, who report to the Board of Trustees, are responsible for the Foundation’s administrative affairs. The Pastoral Counselors advise the Board of Trustees on matters relating to the two Church bodies (ELCA and LCMS) which are affiliated with the seminaries which the Foundation supports and review scholarship grant applications with the trustees.

Financial

The Foundation has an endowment of approximately $12.5 million and currently awards scholarship grants of $4,000 each to about 115-125 seminary students for an academic year. The grants are funded from endowment income and appreciation in the endowment. An independent investment advisor manages the endowment and reports to the Board of Trustees.

The Foundation accepts financial support from the general public. Its most recent Annual Report is available upon request.
